Richmond River
The Richmond River comes out at Ballia and according to Google it seems to be one of the most polluted rivers on the east coast of Australia. I recently went to a meeting in Ballina put on by Oz Fish to try and find out why our waves are not considered safe to surf on after big rains and floods. I found it to be a very depressing meeting. I was pleased that there were people in the room who cared and were trying. However, the water quality is getting worse, and politicians and the general public seem to have a head in the sand approach. If you care about things like property prices, tourism, fishing, oyster farming and the survival of the human species then you would think cleaning up the river would be a priority for all of us living in the area. Why would you want to live on the Richmond River if it's not considered safe to swim in and it's not considered safe to eat the fish living in the river? I've heard that people living along the river don't want to highlight the problem since they don't want property prices to go down. My response is fix the problem and property prices are more likely to go up. Amazing.
